The Pioneering Period of 798 Art District was about 2002 to 2004. During this period, the exhibitions were mainly experimental exploration of contemporary art and the main body was composed by art studios, galleries and abandoned spaces; such as the "Beijing Ukiyoe" (2002) of Tokyo Art Projects, "Left Hand and Right Hand" of 798 Space and Thinking Hands (2003), "China's Photographic Painting" of Art Seasons Gallery (2004) and others. These exhibitions had guided the social influence of 798 Art District in the early period.

In 2003, 798 Art District faced the demolition crisis; some artists spontaneously organized the exhibition "Re-Build 798" to coordinate with the appealing of protecting art district to the society. This exhibition became a part of the community action about the growing up of 798 Art District.
