Dance "Thousand-armed Goddess of Mercy" (CNTV)

If you think that art by disabled people has a limited appeal, a group of special performers in Beijing might just change your mind. The China Disabled People's Art Troupe tells us why.

This is a routine ballet class for deaf and mute youngsters. The students may not be able to hear the music, but they seldom miss a beat. By watching the gestures of their teachers and memorizing the rhythms, their ballet movements are surprisingly graceful.

The troupe is rehearsing the much acclaimed piece "Thousand-armed Goddess of Mercy", which won for best "song and dance" work at the 2005 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. The audience was deeply moved by the performance, a testament to the power of dance.
