Artificially-bred crested ibis released to wild in NW China

A total of 32 artificially-bred crested ibis were released to the wild here on Wednesday. The crested ibis, also known as the Japanese crested ibis, is large with white plumage, and before the 1930s had thrived in Japan, China, Russia and the Korean peninsula. But its population was sharply reduced due to wars, natural disasters, hunting and other human activities. In 1990, the artificial breeding project was launched in China, and it has gone on to successfully breed several generations of crested ibis. By far, wild crested ibis' numbers have reached nearly 1,000, and the artificially-bred population has hit 700. (Xinhua/Ding Haitao)
