San Francisco, Sept. 22 (People's Daily Online) --To celebrate Confucius's 2564th birthday, overseas Chinese in Northern America gathered and held a memorial ceremony on September 22 to commemorate the Chinese philosopher and educator.
This year marks the 32nd Northern California Confucius Memorial Ceremony in the Bay Area. As the organizer, the Committee of Confucius Memorial Ceremony started the ceremony following the traditional ways with drumming, bowing, offering incense and chanting the eulogy. Attending students also read the "Rules of Disciples" at the ceremony.
Born on September 28, 551 BC, Confucius was a philosopher, educator and editor. The philosophy of Confucius emphasized not only personal and governmental morality, but also correctness of social relationships, justice, and sincerity. His theories, which advocate peace and social harmony, were further developed into a philosophy known as Confucianism.
