The third World Cities Summit 2012, commenced on July 1st, puts emphasis on urban sustainable development in the process of urbanization.

Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore Prime Minister pointed out in his opening speech at the summit that there would be an unprecedented pace of world urbanization, currently with 50% of people living in urban areas worldwide and 70% of global output being produced in the same areas. By 2050, there would be additional 2.5 billion people living in urban areas due to urbanization process in emerging countries, which would pose challenges in terms of efficient urban management, rational planning and sustainable development.
