Guangdong considering ordinance to encourage heroism

Guangdong province is considering an ordinance that would require the provincial government to reward the family of a person who dies saving others with a lump sum of 300,000 yuan, and the related municipal government to reward the hero’s family with a lump sum of more than 150,000 yuan.

The rewards are intended to improve social morality, encourage heroic deeds, and protect heroes’ legitimate rights and interests.

The draft Ordinance of Guangdong Province on Rewarding and Protecting Legitimate Rights and Interests of Good Samaritans has attracted great media attention as it would raise the reward for heroic deeds considerably.

However, the measures in the draft ordinance for protecting heroes’ legitimate rights and interests are of greater practical significance. It is commendable that the ordinance contains provisions to strengthen protection of heroes’ rights and interests through the existing pension and employment injury insurance systems as well as other channels.

It is equally necessary to offer tangible financial rewards to Good Samaritans, especially those who died saving the lives of others, and to provide meticulous care and assistance to people who end up injured or disabled as a result of their heroic deeds.
