HONG KONG, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of about 1.83 million registered geographical constituency electors cast their votes in the fifth Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo) Election on Sept. 9, representing a provisional cumulative turnout rate of about 53 percent, compared with 45.2 percent in the 2008 LegCo Election, the city's Electoral Affairs Commission Chairman Justice Barnabas Fung said on Monday.

Fung said that about 150,000 registered electors of the traditional functional constituencies cast their votes in their respective functional constituency, representing a provisional cumulative turnout rate of about 69.6 percent.

About 1.67 million voters cast their votes in the District Council (second) functional constituency election. The provisional cumulative turnout rate is about 51.9 percent.

Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region CY Leung expects the final 2012 LegCo Election turnout rate to be more or less the same as in previous years with a high turnout rate, if not even higher.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the central counting station, Leung said the number of seats and candidates for this year's LegCo election was higher than in previous years, and the competition was keen.

He said the candidates had campaigned hard, but the order at polling stations was good. Election complaints were mostly about the candidates' advertisements. And the government will handle those complaints according to established procedures.
