Chinese leaders, lawmakers discuss gov't work report

BEIJING, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang and other senior leaders on Thursday joined national lawmakers in panel discussions on the government work report.

The report was delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday when the 12th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, opened its first annual session in Beijing.

While joining NPC deputies from southwestern province of Guizhou to deliberate on the report, Li urged earnest implementation of environmental protection standards as many industrial enterprises in eastern regions have moved to central and westerns regions like Guizhou for lower costs, but raising environmental concerns.

Li called for better education and training of high-quality human resources to help lay a sound foundation of industrial transition.

He also asked local governments to support migrant workers to return to their rural hometown to start businesses and create jobs.

While joining the discussions with the NPC deputies from Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang encouraged the deputies to play a greater role in the implementation of the "one country, two systems" policy.

In his discussion with NPC deputies representing Taiwan compatriots, Yu Zhengsheng, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said efforts must be made to increase mutual trust and exchanges to consolidate the foundation of the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties.

Liu Yunshan, another member of the Standing Committee, said policymakers must have the vision to ensure policies to cater to demands both at present and in future.

Liu made the remarks while joining the panel discussion with national legislators from east China's Fujian Province.

Standing Committee member Zhang Gaoli said urbanization should be carried out in an active yet steady way while joining the panel discussion with national legislators from southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

Zhang expressed a wish for Chongqing to lead other provinces in western China to build a well-off society in an all-round way.
