By the end of 2012, the latest statistics from the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee indicated that the membership of the party had reached a total of 85.1 million, a year-on-year increase of 2.5 million people, or 3.1 percent.

The party's basic-level organization has grown by 175,000 to 4.2 million, an increase of 4.3 percent. The party membership structure was steadily optimized in 2012, and both party organizations and the scope of the party’s work were extended, providing a clear indication of its energy and vitality.

In terms of demographics, the party has 20.3 million female members, making up 23.8 percent of the total membership, 5.8 million ethnic minority members, making up 6.8 percent of the total membership, 34.1 million members with a college degree or above, making up 40 percent of the total membership, and 21.8 million members under the age of 35, making up 25.6 percent of the total membership.

In terms of grassroots distribution, there are party organizations in 7,245 city streets, 33,000 villages and towns, 87,000 communities, and 588,000 incorporated villages (neighborhood committees) throughout the country. The coverage of party units in government organizations and institutions has reached 99.97 percent and 99.4 percent respectively, and coverage in state-owned enterprises represents 99.98 percent. 1.5 million non-state enterprises have established party organizations, representing 99.95 percent of those corporations subject to the provisions of the party organization regulation. 40,300 social groups have established party organizations, representing 99.2 percent of groups subject to the provisions of the party organization regulation. 39,500 other non-commercial organizations have also established party organizations, which is 99.61 percent of those subject to the provisions of the party organization regulation.
