Body of late China chief justice cremated

BEIJING, Oct. 16 -- The body of Zheng Tianxiang, formerly the president of China's Supreme People's Court (SPC), was cremated in Beijing on Wednesday.

Zheng died of an illness on Oct. 10 at the age of 99. In addition to the post of SPC president, Zheng also served as a member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Advisory Commission in the 1980s.

Chinese leaders Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan, Zhang Gaoli as well as former leader Hu Jintao attended Zheng's funeral Wednesday at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in west Beijing, said an official statement.

The statement described Zheng as an "outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a time-tested and loyal Communist fighter, a proletarian revolutionist, and an outstanding leader of the country's political and legal work."
