Senior Chinese military leaders meet U.S. retired generals

BEIJING, June 25 (ChinaMil) -- Retired generals of China and the United States are expected to jointly contribute wisdom and strength to maintaining the overall situation of the bilateral relations, a senior Chinese military official said in Beijing yesterday morning.

Vice Chairman Xu Qiliang of the Central Military Commission (CMC), met yesterday with a visiting U.S. delegation of senior retired generals headed by William Owens, former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the U.S. Armed Forces, in Beijing.

Xu Qiliang said that during the world anti-fascist war, the people of the two countries fought side by side and supported each other, leaving behind many much-told stories.

Currently, China and the U.S. are committed to building the China-U.S. relations into a new model of relations between major countries, Xu said, adding that on the top of agendas of the two militaries is to earnestly implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries, which needs broad participation by all sectors of the society including retired generals of the two countries.

Owens expressed that the U.S. delegation of senior retired generals is willing to strengthen exchanges, enhance mutual trust and promote cooperation with the Chinese side, so as to add new impetus to the development of the relations between the two countries and the two militaries.

Zhang Yang, member of the Central Military Commission and director of the General Political Department (GPD) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), met with the U.S. delegation of senior retired generals at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing yesterday afternoon.

Zhang Yang said that the establishment of new-type China-U.S. military relations is in the common interests of the people of the two countries, and is also conducive to world peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

He hoped that the militaries of the two countries would enhance communication and coordination on the principle of honesty, trustworthiness, mutual respect and cooperation.

Owens expressed that the U.S. retired generals are willing to make joint efforts with the Chinese side to push forward the construction of the new-type China-U.S. military relations.

The delegation came to visit China at the invitation of the China Association for International Friendly Contact (CAIFC).
