World scholars gather in Beijing for symposium of arms control

BEIJING, Aug. 9 (ChinaMil) --Hosted by the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA), an international symposium themed on arms control and strategic stability was held on August 8, 2013 in Beijing. More than 120 experts and scholars from such countries as China, the United States, Russia and Sweden and such international organizations as the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and the International Crisis Group (ICG) were present at the symposium.

Li Wuwei, vice president of the Chinese People's Association for Peace and Disarmament (CPAPD), delivered a keynote speech entitled Adhere to Peaceful Development and Achieve Win-win Cooperation.

Gareth Evans, former Australian minister for foreign affairs (1988-1996), Sha Zukang, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (2007-2012) and Qian Lihua, vice president of the CACDA, also delivered speeches on their propositions concerning responding to nuclear threats in the Asia-Pacific region, promoting the UN's role in maintaining international peace and China's national defense policy respectively at the opening ceremony.

Strategic stability and world security, the concept and reality of a "nuclear-weapons-free world", nuclear energy development and nuclear safety, cyber security, and prospects of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty (FMCT) are all expected to be the topics of brainstorms given by the experts and scholars during the two-day-long symposium.
