The "Strategy Seminar on Coping with the Aging of Population" sponsored by the China National Committee of Aging was held in Beijing on July 1. Hua Jianmin, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Jiang Zhenghua, director of committee of experts of the Strategic Research Group for Coping with the Aging of Population, Li Liguo, minister of the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China and over 200 experts and scholars researching on aging problem attended the seminar to give advice to cope with the problem of the aging problem.
The number of people aged 60 years old and above reached 185 million
Li Liguo said that the number of Chinese population aged 60 or older has reached 185 million at the end of last year and the figure will reach about 480 million by 2050, exceeding one-third of the total population, and China will become one of the countries with the highest degree of population aging. Compared with the developed countries, China will have more complicated conditions, more arduous task and more urgent time to cope with the aging of population.
Jiang Zhenghua said that the aging of population changed the structures of labor force, the consumer demand and the tax fund of China, reduced the national savings and capital accumulation and increased the economic and social costs providing for the aged.
