A bus running between downtown and Chongming Island burst into flames Saturday morning, though no one was hurt, local media reported.
The Shanghai-Chongming No.6 bus caught fire around 9 am as it drove down Chenhai Road in Chongming County, according to a report on the news website Eastday.com.
"It was the bus driver who first saw the flames. He caught sight of a fire at the back of the bus from the rearview mirror," said an employee from Shanghai Jin'gao Public Bus Company, which runs the bus line.
The bus driver immediately stopped the vehicle and told the passengers to get off, the employee said. The bus contained 45 seats and was carrying 45 passengers.
"It took only two or three minutes before the bus was engulfed in flames because a strong wind was blowing that day. The fire spread quickly," he told the Global Times.
A witness said black smoke could be seen from hundreds of meters away, according to a report in the Shanghai Morning Post. The fire gutted the vehicle down to its charred frame.
"The seats and the outer shell are plastic and prone to catching fire," the bus company employee said.
