Confusion surrounds attack, death of melamine dairy whistle-blower

By Bai Tiantian (Global Times)

The whistle-blower who first revealed insider deals in China's dairy industry and exposed counterfeit dairy products was killed earlier this month in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. Local police are investigating the case.

Jiang Weisuo, 44, was said to have been brutally attacked on November 2 in an alleged robbery after attending a business meeting. He apparently passed away on November 14 due to severe injuries after spending 12 days in a local hospital.

The Nandu Daily reported on Thursday that the local public security bureau in Xi'an has already arrested a suspect. The police contacted by the Global Times confirmed an investigation was ongoing but refused to provide any details.

Jiang, originally a farmer from Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, published an investigative report in 2006 on the status quo of western China's dairy industry, revealing for the first time the counterfeit issues in this business and how dairy farmers were exploited by large corporations.
