Metro workers replace Line 1’s oldest track

The local subway operator will finish replacing the track on the oldest section of metro Line 1 next year as the track approaches the end of its 20-year lifespan, local media reported Wednesday.

Although replacing the track is just part of routine subway maintenance, the change should make riding the line between the Shanghai South Railway Station and Xujiahui Station quieter and smoother for passengers, according to a report in the Shanghai Morning Post. Specifically, the change should eliminate the screech that occurs when the train puts on the brakes.

The maintenance shouldn't affect subway passengers because the work will take place between midnight to 3:30 am, said a manager surnamed Zhang with Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.

The company will replace the track on Line 1, which opened in May 1993, between the Shanghai South Railway Station and Xujiahui metro stations, the report said. The line's oldest section runs between Xujiahui Station and Jinjiang Park, which is one stop past the railway station.

So far, workers have replaced all of the track between the Shanghai Indoor Stadium and Caobao Road stations, Zhang said. The workers don't work on the project every day due to their other maintenance duties.

"To ensure passenger safety, we regularly examine the track on all of the metro lines. We will replace the track if we find something wrong, even if it hasn't been in use for 20 years," said an employee surnamed Feng with Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.
