NANCHANG, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Eleven children have died following a traffic accident that occurred Monday in east China's Jiangxi Province, local authorities said.

Four children were injured after a van carrying 15 kindergarteners and one teacher plunged into a roadside pond around 9 a.m. in a rural area of Guixi City, which is located in the city of Yingtan, a spokesman for the Yingtan municipal government said.

Three children died instantly, while another eight died at a local hospital after efforts to save them failed.

The four injured are in stable condition, the spokesman said.

The spokesman said the pond is about 3 to 4 meters deep.

Police have detained the van's driver for questioning and are investigating the cause of the accident.
