China's social trust index declined further last year, according to the Annual Report on Social Mentality of China 2012 released by the Institute of Sociology under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Jan. 7.

Social trust declines further

According to the report, China's overall social mentality is positive, but there is some negative sentiment which is not conducive to personal health or social harmony. Frequent social incidents have made the people more impatient and incontrollable.

Certain members of vulnerable groups have expressed joy, admiration, and compliment at some incidents when they should have expressed sympathy, resentment, and denouncement. This phenomenon requires special vigilance.

Urban residents less satisfied than rural counterparts

The study found that nearly 45 percent of respondents were satisfied with their lives in 2012, and the satisfaction index reached 3.4 points out of 5 points, below the 47 percent satisfaction rate and nearly 3.5 points satisfaction index in 2011. Urban residents were less satisfied with their lives than rural residents.

Women were more satisfied with their lives than men. Old people were most satisfied with their lives, followed by middle-aged people, and young people were least satisfied. Poorly educated residents were most satisfied, and fairly educated residents were least satisfied.

According to the report, factors affecting social satisfaction include family, leisure and living status, and confidence in the future. Respondents who have high income and houses and do not bear the burden of providing for old parents, as well as those who have enough rest and leisure time were relatively more satisfied with their lives. Furthermore, respondents who are more confident in the future tend to be more satisfied with their lives.
