Pushy parents turn matchmaking events into ‘marriage fairs’

People's Daily Online)  08:02, July 10, 2013

As more and more unmarried youngsters in Shanghai are too busy to look for their other half, their parents have to take the job to help them find the future spouse. Nowadays, more Chinese parents show up in this kind of events on behalf of their unmarried children, which has become a typical phenomenon across the country.

Every week, over 500 aged people in their 50’s and 60’s, carrying the information about their unmarried children, will gather in the parks to talk about love and wedding. The match-making event and corners are very popular in China.

However, young single people are seldom seen here. Instead, their parents attend, keeping an eye out for suitable future in-laws, not for themselves, but for their children. Some pushy parents even bar their children from the face-to-face meetings at the events.
