Yan Gaifan’s home is in Zhengzhou, the capital city of central China’s Henan province. The family’s happiness suddenly paused after her 11-year-old daughter was seriously injured from a car crash three years ago and then became a vegetable. The family soon was hit by another misfortune.
Yan’s husband was diagnosed with cirrhosis due to overwork. The adversity didn’t beat Yan. Since the accident, Yan tried to encourage her daughter to wake her up by all means. She read articles wrote by her daughter. She talked to her daughter even though couldn’t get any response.
She massaged her daughter’s body to avoid muscle atrophy. She also encouraged herself not to give up when she felt tired. Yan Gaifan’s efforts paid off. Her daughter is able to give facial expression now. Yan’s love for daughter and persistence moves everyone who knows her story and she is also known as the “reading mother” in China.
