Man beats pregnant nurse, holding she disturbs his wife and baby with regular check

A man accused of punching and kicking a pregnant nurse, blaming her for disturbing his wife and newborn while on her regular round of checks, has been detained by police in the southern city of Shenzhen.

The suspect, surnamed Fan, claimed he couldn’t remember details about the incident on Monday morning due to exhaustion, according to a source close to the police. He claimed he was the one beaten up during an argument with the nurse, 27-year-old Bai Wei.

Police didn’t believe him and found bruises on his feet that might have come from kicking Bai. Fan is in police custody, accused of intentional injury, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.

While Bai has had difficulty sleeping since the event, doctors have said the 14-week-old fetus is in stable condition. The Baoan District People’s Hospital, where she works, has invited medical experts to conduct further examinations.

At around 3:30am on Monday, she was doing a round of checks of patients but the room occupied by Fan, his wife and baby was locked. She knocked the door, but Fan wouldn’t let her in, Bai said.

After she returned to the nursing station, Fan walked out and yelled at her, slapping her in face, pulling her to the ground and striking her so that she bled from her ear and neck.

“I lay down to prevent him hitting my baby. I wanted to cry for help but I just fainted,” she said.

A man related to a patient was passing by and stopped the beating, the newspaper reported.

Bai said she never spoke harshly to Fan, saying she was just “doing my duty.”

The police source described Fan’s wife as indifferent toward the accusations made regarding her husband. When Bai was examined and found to have minor injuries, Fan’s wife and her family apologized to the nurse. But Bai’s family rejected what they called their “insincere apology,” the newspaper reported.

It was not known whether Bai would seek compensation from Fan, the report said.
