BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- China said Thursday it welcomed the holding of Yemen's presidential election as scheduled, and hoped the country would restore normal social order at an early date.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks at a regular press briefing while commenting on the Feb. 21 Yemeni presidential election.
"We hope relevant parties make joint efforts to ensure a peaceful and orderly political transitional process, to restore normal social order at an early date and realize national stability and development," Hong said.
According to the Supermen Committee for Elections and Referendum, about 80 percent of Yemeni registered voters cast their ballots in the presidential election.
Yemen's new president will lead a two-year transitional government tasked with amending the constitution and holding parliamentary elections.
