
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Wu Hongbo, a senior Chinese diplomat as the Under-Secretary-General to lead the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Prior to the announcement, Wu Hongbo had been the Chinese Ambassador to Germany since 2009. Before that, he was Assistant Minister at the Foreign Ministry.
And from 2003 to 2005, Wu served as Ambassador to the Philippines. He had also served in the Special Administrative Region of Macao and the UK. Born in 1952, Wu is a native of east China's Shandong province.
