After the burst of economic bubble in the early 1990s, Japan suffered economic stagnation for a long time. Its ambitious dream of political and military power evaporated in the end. In stark contrast, some emerging powers represented by China sprung up one after another. Therefore, the strong sense of frustration has been spreading in Japan.
After the massive earthquake on March 11, 2011, some Japanese politicians and social elites pointed out that only by evoking nationalism can the Japanese spirit revive.
Although some Japanese call on to pursue development by strengthening cooperation with Asian countries, rightwing politicians and other political forces attempt to enhance social cohesion by means of antagonism in the foreign policy. It is under such a context that Japan shows short-sighted rashness on the Diaoyu Islands Dispute.
Will it do anything good by confronting China to get rid of the sense of frustration? It must be very clear to Japan that hedging against China will doom to fail.
