SUVA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Prime Minister Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama on Wednesday evening attended a reception held by the Chinese Embassy here to mark the 63rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The reception was held in the Holiday Inn hotel amid festival atmosphere, which was also attended by several hundreds of others, including local officials, members of diplomatic corps, embassy staff, and representatives of local businesses and Chinese communities.

Speaking at the reception, Ambassador Huang Yong said that China has implemented the policy of reform and opening up for more than 30 years, after which the Chinese people have realized the historical change from lacking of basic necessities to overall well-off by keeping the national economy a continuous growth. The percentage of China's GDP in the world's total jumped from 1 percent in 1978 to 9.5 percent in 2010.

He said Fiji is a key country in the South Pacific. China has been developing ties with Fiji on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference. The sound development of China-Fiji relations not only brings benefits to the people of both countries, but also make contributions to peace, stability and development in the South Pacific.

China's role in this region has been constructive and its existence inclusive, which is in the fundamental interest of both peoples to develop mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Fiji as well as other Pacific island countries, says Huang.

China is willing to work with all countries within and outside of the region to promote sustainable development in the South Pacific, he added. Most viewed commentaries
