Brunei's Sultan Hassanal meets Chinese FM on bilateral ties

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Saturday at the Istana Nurul Iman palace.

Sultan Hassanal said the exchange between the two peoples enjoys a long history and two countries have closed and friendly relations. Brunei is willing to work with China to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries to promote cooperation in energy, agriculture, culture and education.

Brunei spoke highly of China's active and responsible role in safeguarding regional peace and stability. Sultan Hassanal expressed thanks to China's strong support of Brunei to fulfill the duty of ASEAN Chair, saying Brunei is willing to work with China to jointly strengthen the strategic partnership of ASEAN and China to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Wang Yi said Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Majesty the Sultan agreed to enhance the strategic partnership between the two countries, which indicated the profound friendship and mutual trust between them and the further stable development of their future ties.

China and Brunei, in line with their own development needs, will promote all-round cooperation. China will continue to support its enterprises to participate in Brunei's economic diversification strategy. China will focus on cooperation in such fields as energy, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, education, culture, health, tourism and other areas of cooperation.

Wang said the primary aspect of China-ASEAN relations is good- neighborly friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation and common development, the two sides are fully capable of maintaining peace and stability in the region, including the South China Sea.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of a strategic partnership between China and ASEAN, while Brunei serves as ASEAN chair. China is willing to fully support Brunei to fulfill the role of its ASEAN chairmanship and fully support Brunei in making the series of meetings of East Asian leaders a great success so as to give positive signals to the world of East Asia's prospects of further prosperity.

On Saturday, Wang Yi also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Prince Mohamed Bolkiah and Second Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Lim Jock Seng.
