African media attends seminar on 'Chinese Dream' and 'African Dream'

Beijing, Sept. 17 (People's Daily Online) -- On Wednesday morning, more than 20 media workers with the mainstream media outlets from South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Liberia, Zambia and other African countries visited People's Daily Online. They had in-depth discussions on further deepening the media cooperation between China and Africa and strengthening sharing of development experience.

Luo Hua, Vice President of People's Daily Online met with the delegation before the seminar. He introduced the development of People's Daily Online to the guests and talked about the contents as well as the management of the website.

People's Daily Online attaches importance to report of Africa. Its coverage ranges from political upheaval in African countries, economic and social development, China-Africa cooperation, to Chinese enterprises in Africa, Luo said. People's Daily Online English and French versions also run a lot of reports about Africa.

People's Daily Online established its subsidiary company in South Africa in 2011. Since the establishment, the company has grown rapidly, publishing 1,849 news items last year. It has invited a number of local celebrities to do video interview. People’s Daily Online's South African company also signed a cooperation agreement with local newspaper The New Age. It started to offer mobile news in Chinese for local Chinese readers. The company would launch mobile news in English version in near future, said Luo.

The People's Daily is the reporter and recorder of the Chinese Dream; the development of the People's Daily is part of the Chinese Dream, Zhang Yong, Vice Director of External Communication Department of the People's Daily noted.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to the friendly communication and cooperation between China and Africa, and in this big background, the People's Daily attaches great importance to developing friendly cooperation relations with African media.

The People's Daily invites an African media delegation to China every year with the purpose of promoting the friendly communication and cooperation between Chinese and African media. After visiting China, the African media can report a real China to the African people, and let the African people know more about China. Such visits also make contributions to the friendly communication and cooperation between China and the African media.

Wang Xijun, an official with Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in his speech that the Chinese Dream is the same with the good dream of people around the world and has the same root and quality with African people’s dream. The consistency of Chinese Dream and the African Dream fundamentally determines that the two peoples can work to realize the dream hand in hand.

Introducing the trade cooperation between China and Africa, Chen Hao, an official with Ministry of Commerce, said over the past decade, the average annual growth of China-Africa trade was more than 30 percent. From 2009, China has served as the first largest trading partner of Africa for four consecutive years. From January to June 2013, China-Africa economic and trade cooperation continued to maintain the momentum of rapid growth, with bilateral trade exceeding 100 billion U.S. dollars, up 7 percent year-on-year. The direct investment flow also reached 1.7 billion dollars, an increase of more than 70 percent.

The guests voiced out ardent hopes and opinions at the seminar. Augustus D.R. Bortue, Editor-in-Chief of Liberia-based Heritage Newspaper said, “I want to represent the Heritage to express our desire. We will try our best to improve and consolidate media cooperation with China, as well as the friendship between us. In many countries in Africa, Tanzania and Liberia, for example, China plays an important role in the process of reconstruction and development. So as the media, we also want to take responsibility, to maintain the cooperative and friendly relations between us through our own efforts.”
