From mid-January to early February of this year, the southern regions of China suffered four successive attacks of low-temperature rain and freezing snow, registering as the extreme weather of the last 50 years, and of the last 100 years for regions such as Guizhou and Hunan.
During the most critical moments, senoir leaders including Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao came to frontline to guide the disaster rescue efforts, which has touched many readers from home and abroad. They left massages to express their gratitude and praise to the leaders and their efforts by saying "With our General Secretary and Premier, billions of people enjoy peace and safety."
The following messages are some of which left on People's Daily Online in early February 2008.
--After a long period of rain and snow, today is a bright and sunny day, and accompanying this fine weather is the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), whose thoughts are on the plight of China's disaster-stricken people.
--The Party and the army should learn from the General Secretary and the Premier, because they care about the people, constantly putting aside their own comfort and safety. We are not going home for the spring festival but will share your cares and worries. Please accept our salute to all those on the frontlines of disaster relief, thank you for all your hard work!
--The General Secretary is our loyal friend. Across hundreds of thousands of miles, he has come to our hometown. The flowers are smiling and the people are happy, the countrymen miss their dear General Secretary. He has spared no trouble in visiting the households of ordinary people, inspecting the farm fields and factory buildings. He holds in his heart people of all walks of life including workers, farmers, businessmen, students and soldiers. He is always with the people and busy working. One Party decision after another has warmed the hearts of the common people. Every piece of good news is reported to our dear General Secretary for he is our loyal friend.
--Blizzards are natural phenomena and though natural disasters present a difficult crisis, with our General Secretary and Premier, billions of people enjoy peace and safety.
--During the snow disaster, General Secretary Hu and Premier Wen kept in mind the safety and well being of the people all the time, working hard and sparing no effort in the performance of their duties, showing thoroughly the deep love and care of the Party and government for the people. The gratitude and love that the people have toward their leaders, the Party and the government are earnestly aroused during the snow disaster, which will greatly enhance the solidarity among the people of all China and advance the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation with all the people united as one!
--As the Premier of a great country, he willingly shares in the people's anxieties and concerns. This is a blessing to both the nation and the people. As somebody who spends the spring festival away from home, I would like to say: Mr. Premier, thank you for your hard work! Take care! Have a very happy Spring Festival!
--The people love the people's Premier, and the people's Premier loves the people. The sky is even brighter after the snow and after the natural disasters. Our motherland will become even stronger!
--I am finally home, thanks to the government and Premier Wen. What we see and hear traveling home for the spring festival makes us truly believe that our government is a pragmatic government.
