NOTES

This refers to the working conference called in Beidaihe by the Central Committee from late July to late August, 1962. It laid the ground for the Tenth Plenary Session of the Party's Eighth Central Committee. At the conference, Mao Zedong emphasized the question of classes, the general situation and the contradictions in China at the time, stressing again and again that classes and class struggle still existed in our country and maintaining that the bourgeoisie would exist and attempt to stage a comeback throughout the historical period of socialism. He expounded class struggle, which does exist within certain limits in socialist society, in absolute terms and made it too broad in scope.
