Slogans Released to Greet Macao's Return

In the run-up to Macao's return to the motherland, the Chinese government Monday released a list of slogans to greet this major event.

"Warmly celebrate our government's resumption of exercising sovereignty over Macao," reads the one at top of the 10 slogans.

Macao, which has been under Portuguese rule for several centuries, is set to return to the motherland on December 20.

"The return of Macao represents the Chinese people wiping out national humiliation, and Macao's entry into a new historic epoch, " one slogan says.

"The return of Macao marks a major step toward the completion of reunification of the motherland," says another.

The list devotes several items to the "one country, two systems " policy, initiated by the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s.

"One country, two systems" is a great beginning in realizing the motherland's peaceful reunification; implement the "one country, two systems" policy; carry out "Macao people governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy; and, maintain Macao's long-term stability and development, the slogans read.

"Uphold the 'one country, two systems' policy, and complete the great cause of the motherland's reunification," says another.

The slogans also stress the importance of Macao's Basic Law. "The Basic Law of Macao represents the fundamental guarantee of Macao's long-term stability and development." "Study, promote and implement the Basic Law."

The slogans express the belief that Macao will have a better future.

The list of slogans was released jointly by the Information Office and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.
