Sci-Tech Chinese University Students Vie for Challenge Cup

Scientific and technological ideas and products from 300 Chinese universities will compete for the "Challenge Cup" in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality tomorrow, and some of the winners will be sold to enterprises.

Lin Wei of Sichuan United University won first prize in the last competition, and his chemical formula was bought by one company for seven million yuan (0.8 million US dollars).

Enterprises have shown great interest in this competition, and many will send delegations to Chongqing seeking partnerships.

A 3-day meeting will be held for talks between university students and enterprises to promote the transformation of the students' ideas into productive forces.

Initiated in 1989, the cup aims to nurture young talent. The competition is organized jointly by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, the China Association for Science and Technology and the All-China Students Federation.

The students' presentations include papers, formulas and inventions related to agriculture, medicine, and chemistry, as well as papers on the social sciences.

The cup has attracted millions of potential buyers and outstanding students, many of whose ideas have gone into production over the past 10 years.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Tibet Autonomous Region will join the competition for the first time, said an official with the organizing committee. (Xinhua)
