Sports Brazil Ousts China in World Cup Volleyball

Brazil boosted their chance to qualify for next year's Sydney Olympic Games as the Atlanta Olympic bronze medallists ousted China in four sets on November 6 in Toyama at the World Cup women's volleyball tournament.

China, the runners-up to Cuba in Atlanta, took the first set before they lost 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-23 in the 98-minute clash in Toyama, central Japan.

With only three berths for the Sydney Olympics at stake in the World Cup event, China had to beat Russia to keep alive their Olympic tour hope.

In Sapporo, northern Japan, hot favourites Russia rolled into their fourth straight win when the European champions overpowered Argentina 25-12, 25-19, 31-33, 25-14.

South Korea overlasted the United States for a tough 16-25, 25- 13, 25-21, 24-26, 18-16 victory, while Peru marked their first win by beating African champions Tunisia 25-17, 25-11, 25-15 in Toyama. (Xinhua)
