China Developing Technology to Strengthen Police

China will arm its police with advanced science and technology to enhance overall operational capacity, according to a recently concluded national conference on technology for police.

A general plan to set up advanced computer networks involving information technology, command centers, detective work, security, and modern traffic control, is now being drafted by the Ministry of Public Security.

China will lead the present police system into the information age in order to increase its ability to rapidly respond to emergencies, said Zhu Entao, assistant minister of public security.

In recent years, China has carried out several measures to improve police technologies, and they have achieved conspicuous effects. Since July this year, more than 230,000 major criminals have been arrested with the help of computer networks.

Sources said the ministry will push forward some 25 technological renovation projects this year, and the fingerprint auto-identification system and DNA medical jurisprudence database will take precedence over other projects on an experimental basis.

In addition, China's police system will recruit a large number of technologists from the public while inspiring the existing staff to make further efforts. (Xinhua)
