Li Stressed "Three Emphases" in His East Tour

Li Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, this week stressed the importance of "Three Emphases" education -- theoretical study, political awareness, and good conduct - during his inspection tour in east China's Jiangsu Province.

"Three Emphases" education is a strategic decision made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to further promote the party building, said Li, who is also a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

"It will prepare the Party ideologically, politically, and organizationally for the new century and new historical tasks," he said at a meeting with local officials in Zhangjiagang City of Suzhou.

He asked officials at the county level to fully realize the importance of the "Three Emphases", overcome their shortcomings, improve their work, and lead the people in opening up a new prospect in the modernization drive.

"We must let the masses see the real effects of the 'Three Emphases' education, so as to increase the public's confidence in the drive," he said.

To better conduct "Three Emphases" education among county officials, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee recently decided to send its members to several cities and counties in a number of provinces to mobilize officials there and conduct related research activities.

Li also visited some enterprises and villages in southern Jiangsu's Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang and Wuxi during his tour between February 22 and 25, where he solicited opinions and suggestions regarding development from local people.

To guarantee a sustained, fast and healthy economic development in the new century, we must further restructure the national economy and give top priority to the development of science and technology, he said.

He said that the southern part of Jiangsu, famous in China for its booming township enterprises, should now shift its development focus onto the high-tech sector so as to upgrade the economic structure.
