Beijing to Improve Lift Management

A total of nine major lift accidents in Beijing were caused by human error last year, leaving eight dead and five badly injured, official said in Beijing Friday.

"Some lift fixing and repairing companies did not have a sense of safety, which was the leading cause of the accidents," said Ling Qiu, deputy-director of the city's Labour and Social Security Bureau (LSSB)..

Ling criticized some profit-driven companies which neglect the security management at the lift security meeting here on Friday. Two lift companies' qualifications were downgraded for the reason.

So far, there are no laws to regulate the installation and repair business in this capital city.

"We will enact laws to control the business; that's our top priority," an official with the Beijing Technology and Quality Supervision Bureau (TQSB), which is in charge of all Beijing-based lift companies under the city's reform plan for this year.

There are 190 qualified lift companies in Beijing right now, sources of the LSSB shows. An overall lift security test is set to be started soon.
