The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, opened its 14th meeting today to prepare for the coming annual NPC plenary session next month.

The draft agenda and the namelist of the presidium and secretary-general for the third plenary session of the Ninth NPC, were presented to today's meeting for discussion. Li Peng, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the meeting.

A draft work report of the NPC Standing Committee to be presented to the full session and a namelist of non-voting delegates to the NPC Session were also tabled at today's meeting. A report on qualifications of newly-elected or added deputies to the NPC were delivered today for confirmation. The only legislative agenda today was a second hearing of a draft decision on supervising the government economic work. The State Council submitted three international treaties for ratification: an extradition treaty with Cambodia, treaty on judicial assistance of civil and commercial cases with Tunis and a accord with Tajikistan on border issue.

The State Council presented a work report on managing the country's cultural market to the legislature.
