FM Spokesman on Human Rights Issue

China attaches great importance to the role of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson in human rights issues, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said on Tuesday.

Zhu said that the Chinese government and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Office will be cooperating to hold the eighth seminar on human rights in the Asia-Pacific region in Beijing from March 1 to 3. Robinson will be attending the meeting.

Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen will meet with Robinson during her visit in Beijing. Chairman Zeng Jianhui of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Guangya will also confer with the commissioner on bilateral cooperation and other issues of common concern.

Zhu also said that China urges the United States to immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights issues, and correct its erroneous decision of proposing an anti-China draft in the upcoming U.N. conference on human rights. Zhu added that the U.S. attempt to meddle in China's internal affairs is doomed to fail once again.
