South China City Sets Deadline for Urban Industrial Polluters

The capital of Guangdong Province in south China has sent the final warning to industrial polluters in the city, ordering them to meet the state discharge criteria before the end of the year or risk being shut down.

According to an investigation carried out in February, 88 percent of the 2,941 industrial plants that cause pollution in the city met state requirements for waste discharge, but 206 polluters failed to meet the target. Deputies to the municipal People's Congress and related government departments have repeatedly warned the plants to treat their pollution discharges. But the managers turned a deaf ear only for making profits. The latest government warning said that the polluters who fail to meet the deadline will be punished in accordance with the new environment law.
