Clinton Pledges Continued One-China Policy

US President Bill Clinton said on March 18 in Washintong that the United States will continue its one-China policy after Chen Shui-bian was elected the "president" of Taiwan.

Clinton pledged in a statement that his administration will go on to conduct "close, unofficial ties with Taiwan" through the American Institute in Taipei, according to a Reuters report.

He said that the United States will strongly support dialogue between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and remain committed to promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
