Restoration of Ancient Palace Underway in Shaanxi

The second phase of restoration of an imperial palace hall built more than 1,300 years ago in Chang' an, the capital of China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and now called Xi'an, is now underway.

China, UNESCO, and Japan have successfully completed the first phase of restoration of Hanyuan Hall, the main part of Daming Palace, at the end of last year.

Historical records say that state rituals and important ceremonies including diplomatic exchanges were carried out in Hanyuan Hall.

The Daming Palace in the northeastern district of Xi'an, now the capital of Shaanxi Province, was the nerve center of Tang politics when Chang'an was at its peak as a cosmopolitan city, with residents of many ethnic backgrounds.

The palace was built in 662 and was destroyed by fire during a war in 886.

Joint action by China, UNESCO and Japan to preserve the ancient palace was agreed to in 1995, and a total of two million U.S. dollars is being invested in the project.
