Chinese Premier Meets Micronesian President

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with visiting President Leo Falcam of the Federated States of Micronesia in Beijing Tuesday afternoon.

Zhu lauded Falcam as an old friend of the Chinese people, expressing the hope his current visit will help stimulate bilateral ties in the new century.

He said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1989, bilateral cooperation in the economy, trade, culture, and education has been increasing, and China's assistance projects in Micronesia have also produced sound economic and social benefits, Zhu said, expressing satisfaction over this.

Although China and Micronesia are far apart and have different national conditions, they share many common interests in both regional and international affairs, he said, noting they are both developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region and shoulder the common task of developing their economies and upgrading the lives of their people.

It is in the fundamental interest of the two countries and the two peoples to further develop bilateral ties, he noted.

The Chinese government, putting great emphasis on its relationship with Micronesia, is willing to deepen and reinforce bilateral cooperation in all fields to benefit the two peoples, Zhu said.

Falcam said he has taken notice of China's tremendous changes in different aspects, and noted his country looks upon China as a model for developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region.

He said China's sincere assistance is a symbol of close friendship, stressing that Micronesia is willing to work together with China to push bilateral ties up to a new stage.
