Major Smuggling Case Cracked down in South China City

Customs police in this port city of Shantou, Guangdong Province, foiled the largest smuggling attempt through a passenger ship in China, which helped retrieve 24 million yuan of tax evasion.

Police found the batch of illegal cargo when they foraged out the "Nanhu" ship, which arrived in Shantou on March 12. The goods were concealed in a cabin under the deck. Smugglers made a covert entrance to the cargo house through a third-class passenger berth. The goods without any customs declaration papers range from medicines, computers, home appliances to automotive parts and components.

The ship was registered in Shantou, and the shipment was reportedly loaded on board in Hong Kong. The police is further investigating the case.

Official Ties with Taiwan Opposed, FM Spokesman

The Chinese government firmly opposes any form of official contact with Taiwan by any country which has established diplomatic relations with China, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said in Beijing Tuesday.

Answering a question concerning some countries' intention to invite Chen Shui-bian, who recently won the election in Taiwan, for a visit, Sun said that adhering to the one China policy is of vital importance to the healthy development of relations between China and any other country.

Sun said countries concerned have made solemn international commitments to the Chinese government on the Taiwan issue, and "we ask them to adhere to the one China principle with practical actions and observe the commitments they have made to the Chinese side."

The spokesman reiterated that there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.

This is a fact that has been recognized by the international community, he stressed.
