Internet Switch Center Opens in ChinaThe first Internet Switch Center opened in Beijing Thursday. Chinese Internet service users have always complained about the slow speed of networks, they call Worldwide Web, Worldwide Wait.Wu Jichuan, Chinese minister of Information Industry, said switching centers in cities not only will meet the demands of domestic Internet portals, but will also facilitate Internet expansion. "Internet Switch Center is a cost-effective, quick and efficient solution which will have far-reaching implications for developing China's Internet," Wu said. China has opened five commercial and four non-commercial networks, including the ChinaNet, UniNet, ChinaGBN, CNCNet, CSTNet, CGWNet, CNCNet, CMNet, CGWNet, and CIETNet. By the end of last year, the number of Chinese Internet service subscribers rose to 8.9 million, with more than 520 licensed Internet service providers. However, the sharp increase of Internet users has resulted in "traffic jam" on the super information highway. Wu said other switch centers will soon emerge across the country, and the brand width of China's networks will be expanded to 1500 Mb/s by the end of this year.
