Longtan Hydropower Station to be Built Soon

Construction on the key part of Longtan Hydropower Station on Hongshui River in south China will begin ahead of schedule as preparations for the project are being accelerated.

The hydropower project was previously announced to be started in 2001, said information from Longtan Hydropower Development Co. Ltd, the builder. Building of the hydropower station ahead of the schedule is obviously related to China's strategy to accelerate the development of the western region. While addressing a recent press conference, Zeng Peiyan, Minister in charge of the State Development Planning Commission, announced a group of big projects, including the Longtan Hydropower Station, which will begin construction in the western region this year.

Longtan Hydropower Plant, situated inside Guangxi's Tian'e County near Guizhou Province, is the most important project out of a number of the planned hydropower plants in exploring abundant hydro-electric resources on the Hongshui River.

The plant will have an installed generating capacity of 4.2 million kw for development in the near future and 5.4 million kw for long-term development. The project will be second only after the gigantic Three Gorges Water Control Project on the Yangtze River in terms of installed generating capacity. The Three Gorges Dam, which is under construction, will have an installed generating capacity of 17.68 million kw.

Planning and prospecting of Longtan Hydropower Station began in 1958. A proposal of building the hydropower project, as well as eight other reports regarding subjects including use of overseas investment in the construction were approved by panels of Chinese experts.

Sources from Longtan Hydropower Development Co. Ltd said that they have been working fast to prepare two other reports -- a feasibility study report on the project and another report on the details of key part of the hydropower station, and getting the two reports approved, so that the hydropower station will start construction as soon as possible.

In the meantime, building of a 14-km-long highway connecting the county seat of Tian'e to the site of the hydropower station is being accelerated and the highway will be ready for traffic in August. Installation of high-voltage power transmission lines for the construction is also carried out very fast.
