UN Calls for Strategies to Reduce Global Poverty

The United Nations Poverty Report 2000 released on April 7 called for the adoption of a new global poverty-reducing strategy.

The strategy should feature more input of resources, and more emphasis on reducing poverty. While ambitious global target has been set, donor countries are reducing their aid and existing poverty problems have not been given due attention.

The report noted that efficient management lacks links between state-planned poverty-reducing work and the grassroots level. The report added that the UNDP will focus on improving the quality of poverty-reducing programs such as assisting countries in improving their decision policies and concentrating assistance to the numerous micro-finance programs.
