Ericsson signs GSM contract with JilinEricsson has signed a US$20 million contract with China Unicom Jilin Branch to supply GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) capacity dilation equipment, according to China Daily's report.Ericsson's joint venture in Beijing will take charge of the production of the equipment. The project includes a wireless base station, base station controller and mobile exchange center. The whole project will be finished by the end of June. Zhang Xingsheng, executive vice-president of Ericsson (China) Co Ltd, said that, as Jilin's exclusive supplier of GSM technology, Ericsson had sold US$60 million worth of equipment to the Jilin company. Rising numbers of users of the GSM network in the province has led to frequent delays in the system in the past few years. "The dilation is expected to enlarge the capacity of the province's GSM network system to 400,000 users. And the service will cover the whole province," he said. "This is a win-win deal. We will further our co-operation with Ericsson on the principle of mutual benefit," said Xin Yaoquan, general manager of China Unicom Jilin Branch. Zhang said, "Ericsson's technology and equipment have an important role to play in Jilin's telecommunication development. Our company plans to offer Jilin people new services gradually over the next few years." Sales of Ericsson's products were valued at US$2.19 billion last year in China, making the country the second-largest market for the company after the United States.
