Chinese President Condoles on Death of Former Tunisian President

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on April 8 sent a telegram of condolences to his Tunisian counterpart Zine Al-Abidine Ben Ali on the death of former Tunisian president Habib Bourguiba, who died at the age of 97 on Thursday.

In the telegram, Jiang said Bourguiba was the great forerunner of Tunisia's national independence, with important contributions to the country's independence, liberation and development.

With his death, China has lost a respectable friend, Jiang noted.

Bourguiba was president of Tunisia between 1957 and 1987. The government is to hold a state funeral for him at noon Thursday.
