Public Interest Party Refutes Annette Lu Remarks

A spokesman for the Public Interest Party of China April 11 strongly criticized Annette Lu, a member of the Taiwan-based Democratic Progressive Party, for her recent remarks advocating independence of Taiwan. The criticism was lodged after a meeting of the major leaders of the Public Interest Party of China, one of the country's eight non-Communist parties.

The spokesman pointed out that Annete Lu's definition of cross- straits relations as that of "distant relatives" and "close neighbors" reveals her betrayal of her motherland and angers all Chinese people, including overseas Chinese all over the world. The Public Interest Party of China resolutely supports the statement made by the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, he said.

"Annete Lu's support of Taiwan independence reveals that she has turned a blind eye to the fact that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China," the spokesman said, "and whoever intends to separate China is doomed to fail."

The spokesman also analyzed Annete Lu's comments and underscored two "againsts": One is that Lu's support of Taiwan independence is "against the basic interest of people on both sides of Taiwan Straits, against the common aspiration of all Chinese people including Taiwan people for peace, stability and development"; the other is that her allegation is "against the principles of international law and practice" in that the one- China principle is generally accepted by the international community.

The spokesman pointed out that "peaceful reunification of the motherland is the noble pursuit of all Chinese people." He called on all Chinese people, including overseas Chinese, to fight against the separatist activities.

In a recent interview with Hong Kong Cable TV, Annette Lu openly advocated independence for Taiwan, which challenged the one- China policy and stirred animosity between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

Lu said that the relationship between the mainland and Taiwan is historically like that of "distant relatives," and geographically they are "close neighbors."

On April 8, a spokesman for the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council refuted Annete Lu's comments by saying that "China will by no means compromise or give in on this matter of principle." And On April 10, People's Daily strongly criticized Annete Lu by publishing an editorial entitled "Annete Lu Betrays Motherland."
