Scientists Suggest Applying High-tech to Control Desert

Chinese scientists have suggested introducing high-tech methods to control the deteriorating desertification of northwest China, which has caused several severe dust storms this spring.

The high-tech should include biotechnology, chemistry and water- saving technologies.

An expert says the sand-fixing methods developed by Chinese scientists in their fight against the desert have been proved effective.

He says without the forest shelter belts covering over 30 million hectares in north China, the dust storms would have been even more violent.

According to the expert, a new chemical material which can absorb and release a large quantity of water has been developed. If the production costs can be lowered, it can be used in agriculture and afforestation in the western region.
