US SaysTime Has Come for Action in Elian CaseA senior US official said on Friday in Washington that action would be taken against the Miami relatives who ignored a deadline on Thursday to hand over Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez so he could be reunited with his father."There will be action taken. We are now in a situation where we need to enforce an order and a family is not in compliance with the law," said Immigration and Naturalisation Commissioner Doris Meissner on NBC's "Today" show. Meissner refused to say when her department would act against the relatives, who defied an order to hand over the child on Thursday at an airport near Miami. The child's father has been waiting in Washington for more than a week to be reunited with his son. "We are in a new stage and we will move forward with enforcement," Meissner said. The relatives won a legal reprieve on Thursday when an Atlanta appeals court granted a temporary stay on Elian's being removed from the country pending an appeals process. The order by Judge J.L. Edmondson of the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta could be confirmed or rejected by a three-judge panel that is expected to meet in the coming days. The 6-year-old boy has been living with his Miami relatives since he was picked up floating on an inner tube off Florida's coast last November. The child's mother and 10 others drowned on the migrant voyage from Cuba.
